Literature Text

A dark figure approached the inn. Most of face and body covered in a long black cloak. He looked to be human from first glance but if you looked hard enough it wasn’t too obvious but he was hiding a pair of wings under his cloak.

The drakken here was known as Damon, a runaway slave. He slipped inside the building and stood before the front desk. “I need a room” was all that came from him in a deep gruff tone.

The woman at the desk handed Damon a key, and he traded for it with a small pouch of coins. “We haven’t been getting far too much businesses lately so you won’t be needing a reservation now will you?” she said with a smile before returning to some paper work.

Raos looked over to see the man enter and then trail off to his room upstairs. After that he looked over at the bar counter. There was a list written out. The drakken groaned as he leaned back on the edge of the bar’s marble surface, most of the list he was given was written in the average human language. He could read a human’s script decently but being bilingual between Draggi and the human’s language still didn’t help much.
He understood human speech, it was different for writing.
He stared down the list and made out what he could. The next job he had was polishing shot glasses behind the counter.
As Raos picked up one of the glasses off a shelf behind the bar he scoffed and shook his head as he set it down.
Each and every glass up there was perfectly clean.
It seemed that Andanari just enjoyed taking out his anger on his slaves.
Raos had only been here for a few days so he hadn’t quite learned the ropes yet. From what he had seem Andanari just loved to abuse his slaves because he didn’t seem to have any better way of releasing his anger
The innkeeper didn’t really seem to know how to treat his slaves either, the same went for customers.

Renfa finally gained up the confidence and the timing was right, she walked over to Raos and got just close enough that she could get his attention. “Um…hello..” she cleared her throat, “I’m Renfa and I just came… to apologize….for making you uncomfortable earlier, and to wish you the best of luck with my old job.”
Renfa didn’t particularly want to use her name but she thought it was essential with her apology.

Raos stood curious for a moment, he watched the girl draw closer. He stood ready to answer any question or order she’d have for him.
He then listened to her as she  requested his forgiveness. What was this? A human girl apologizing to a slave? Raos didn’t even understand why she was acting so sorry about making him uncomfortable. She must’ve been referring to when she was outside. Yes, she was the one that had somehow made him embarrassed. That wasn’t bad though. This girl seemed to be pretty friendly if she had come all this way just to apologize even if the occurrence wasn’t much of a deal.
“Uh…it’s okay, really. You didn’t bother me at all, no harm done.” He said casually.

Renfa sat down at one of the tables for a moment as she watched Raos continue to work. She had once been forced to stay and clean everything in the bar. The list was now on the table and it seemed to be longer than what she normally had to do while working here. Andanari really did pick on his drakken workers more.

After a few more glasses Raos sat down for a moment but as he heard Andanari’s trademark stomping down the stair and into the hall he quickly snatched up a glass and started to scrub it. The Innkeeper flung the door to the bar open once again.
Renfa ducked down under the clothed table completely concealing herself except for her feet. Even though the girl no longer worked here, Andanari still made her quake just as much as any drakken slave.

“Ah, good… you finally started to listen.” He said in a tone that was barely satisfied.
“I have a noble staying here tonight, he’s a good friend of mine. Oh, to just think of what I’d do to you if you dared to screw things up…”
The innkeeper eyed Raos’ wing as he leaned forward a bit so he could get up closer to the drakken’s face.
Slave masters seemed to have a way of shooting fear right into their slaves by limiting the space between them.
The slave behind the bar tripped and fell back against the shelf filled with glasses and also succeeded in knocking a fine bottle of fine liquor off the shelf.
The bottle was undamaged but the glasses feel to the floor and shattered on impact.
Renfa winced as she heard the breaking of glass and then Andanari’s shouts.

“You useless klutz! Look what you did!! I want this entire mess cleaned up before my guest gets here!” NOW!!!” he snapped before leaving. He blamed it all on Raos who was just trying to avoid anything uncomfortable for him.
It was his fault for making the drakken fall.
No one would ever dare to tell him that he had caused it. Andanari loathed anyone who told him he was wrong.
Renfa remained hidden under the table in fear for Andanari returning. She’d just stay there for a little while or at least until the coast was clear.
She couldn’t help but feel sorry for the slave who was just shouted at for something he didn’t even intend to do. With Andanari hovering around she wouldn’t get the chance to help him, it was illegal anyway.

Damon silently walked across the foyer to see Raos sweeping up glass shards. “It so pathetic, what they make them do…” he mumbled with a sneer.
A large man in stripped pajamas overheard Damon’s words on his way down to the foyer and gave a chuckle, “Innit? That’s why we gives them the jobs no respectable man would do.”
Damon forced a slight smile and avoided the temptation to roll the fat man down the stairs.

On the second floor he started to look for his room. He looked down at the key and then at the gold numbers nailed into the doors.
“Two sixteen…two sixteen…” he made his way down the hall. “Two twelve…two fourteen…two sixteen.” He mumbled out each door’s number he passed.
Once Damon reached his room he jiggled the key into it’s hole and unlocked the door.
He made sure no one was nearby as he tightly shut the door behind him and locked it again.
Damon carefully slipped his cloak off his shoulders and tossed it onto the springy bed.
His wings were still tightly folded  against his back and held in place by a black cloth he had wrapped around himself like a tunic. This too he unwrapped and tossed down on the bed feeling much better to be free of the stiffness in his wings.
Damon stretched his splendid silver and black wings to were they measured to their full span about half of the room.
He sat down on the bed and took off his boots. “Humans,” he muttered remembering the fat man he encountered on the stairs, “one day we will have our vengeance…” He leaned back on an elbow and dug out a piece of parchment and a pen from one of the many pockets hidden in his cloak and began to write a letter.

After a little while Andanari wasn’t returning and Renfa finally decided to come out of her hiding place.
She dusted off her dress, “Will that guy ever just stop?” she grumbled.
Her amulet gave off a slight glow, as she put her hands on her hips, “If I was rich I would put him out of business!”

“Ma’am…please, he’s still here you know….” Raos mumbled quietly hoping to calm the girl down. If Andanari heard her he’d be down here once more and probably stir up trouble and the poor slave would just be caught up in the middle of it.
“Oh, sorry… I’m still allowed to think that way though.” Renfa said as her tone calmed.
Raos went back to sweeping the floor for a brief moment and then Andanari was back once again.
“Oh, it feels so good to finally have a slave that’s well broken.” The innkeeper’s voice entered the room.
Raos simply looked down at his work and didn’t meet eyes with Andanari as he continued in silence.
“Good you’re a quiet one too.” Andanari said with his usual cold smile. The drakken didn’t say a word as he still averted his eyes away. “Perhaps…a little too quiet…” he mentioned again.
It felt strange to have such a well behaved slave for once. Just about every slave Andanari received was horribly rash and misbehaved.
He eyed Raos’ missing wing and figured that was what made him this way. He’d remember the effects of that loss for any drakken slaves he’d probably get later on.

Ah, this Damon character intrigues me already! I like this story. I like your characters. It's a shame you haven't gotten any more attention for these stories than you have so far. They're good. :)
